豬豬 Zhu Zhu
豬豬的故事 Zhu Zhu's story:
The New Taipei City Animal Protection Office and SPCA staff and volunteers rescued Zhu Zhu from a private shelter in Tamsui. Her environment was horrifying.
The situation was extremely horrendous with dogs so hungry that they ate dirt, dead mice and even other dogs who had died in the shelter. We were incredibly shocked and distressed. At that time, we pressured the New Taipei City Animal Protection Office to confiscate all the dogs and they were brought to different government shelters across New Taipei City. However, the number of dogs was so large (over 200), the already packed shelters were feeling the pressure from all these new incoming animals. The SPCA held adoption events and made a call out online for people to come to the shelters to adopt these dogs. Some of the dogs were successfully adopted, but over 100 remain at the shelters.
In April, when we visited the dogs, we found that some of them had severe skin problems, and it was spreading quickly. Moreover, it seemed that they lacked the opportunity to exercise and come out of their kennels for sunshine. Many of them had symptoms such as anxiety biting and skin irritations. We then adopted some dogs out of the shelter for treatment, Zhu Zhu being one of them.
She’s a lovely young female who has a pig-like nose, and enjoys eating snacks and being petted by people. When petted, she will sometimes even grunt like a pig! Her only pet peeve is people who put their face too close to hers, she does not like that at all!
