Romney Protest Held Outside Westminster Dog Show
NEW YORK (AP) -- A protest outside the Westminster
dog show aimed at Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney drew
about a dozen demonstrators Tuesday, plus a few pooches.
The half-hour lunchtime demonstration in front of Madison Square
Garden took issue with Romney’s oft-told story of traveling with his
Irish setter, Seamus, on a family vacation in 1983. Romney has said he
put the dog inside a crate and strapped it to the roof rack for a

newly-launched website created by former SeaWorld marine mammal trainers
may not be so easy to disregard.
Carol Ray MA, CCC-SLP, John Jett PhD, Samantha Berg
M.Ac, Dipl.Ac and Jeffrey Ventre MD, have one thing in common. Each was
once a trainer for SeaWorld. A change of heart and the mutual desire to
provide a voice for those without one, has united them in a new venture –
Voice of the Orcas.
With a newly-launched website, the quartet has vowed to highlight and
archive interviews and events that deal with issues of "conservation
and activism" toward whales and dolphins kept in entertainment parks. As
observers of captivity firsthand, their unique perspective and insight,
could fast become SeaWorld's, worst nightmare.

沼林袋鼠輸台 引發動物保護戰
【記者唐澄暐綜合報導】近日新聞報導，一位寵物店主公開宣傳自己從澳洲引進的兩隻沼林袋鼠（一公一母）；台灣防止虐待動物協會（Taiwan SPCA）批評，可見台灣政府在野生動物引進、販賣及繁殖相關法律的漏洞，呼籲民眾抵制忽視動物福祉的交易繁殖者。防止虐待動物協會表示，從台灣野生動物保育法及協會詢問林務局官員的回應得知，如果進口的動物屬於一般野生動物（不包含瀕臨絕種、保育或對大眾有危害的動
物），進口者可進行任何形式的養育，繁殖或販賣。儘管在「野生動物保育法實施細則」提到，以利益為前提的進口者，須持有進口野生動物的相關執照或該產品證

What's behind this scene is the immense pain and suffering of animals kept in captivity and forced to perform for human pleasure. An elephant, a bear, a monkey, an animal...they're not born to know how to dance on one feet, to hop around on their hind legs, to jump from hoop to hoop. Circus owners capture animals from the wild, lock them up in cages, and force train them to perform abnormal tricks - just so they can profit from you, the public. When an animal can't perform a trick or is too tired to do so, they are beaten or starved as a punishment. These animals do it not because they want to, but because they have no other choice. DO NOT visit a circus, by doing so you are taking part in the cruel practice of using animals as a tool to entertain. Don't support the circus and let us all stop the suffering.

隋棠上街 抗議收容所虐殺
動保團體昨天號召三、四百人包圍農委會，抗議全台收容所違法亂紀，假安樂死之名、行虐殺之實，要求由民間團體推派獸醫師，監督收容所執行安樂死，農委會正面回應。
藝人隋棠也到現場聲援，呼籲候選人重視生命教育課題，讓收容所的貓狗少受點苦。

...Broadcast on the BBC, “Exposed” spawned three independent reports into purebred breeding, each finding that some modern breeding practices — including inbreeding and breeding for “extreme traits,” like the massive and short-faced head of the bulldog — are detrimental to the health and welfare of dogs. Bulldogs were noted in all three reports as a breed in need of an intervention, with one going so far as to question whether it is ethically defensible to continue breeding them at all.
“There is little doubt that the anatomy of the English bulldog has considerable capacity to cause suffering,” Dr. Nicola Rooney and Dr. David Sargan concluded in one of the reports, “Pedigree Dog Breeding in the U.K.: A Major Welfare Concern?” “The breed is noted to have locomotion difficulties, breathing problems, an inability to mate or give birth without assistance. . . . Many would question whether the breed’s quality of life is so compromised that its breeding should be banned.” Read More

Study Finds Meerkats Can Recognize Each Other's Voices
Meerkats become confused when an individual's voice is played back from a location that is physically impossible for that individual meerkat to be. When searching for their favorite grub, those furry little creatures known as meerkats emit distinct chirps that let them identify their compatriots as if by name, new research suggests. "Called a 'close call,' this call plays a role in group cohesion, in keeping the group together," study researcher Simon Townsend, of the University of Zurich in Switzerland, told LiveScience. "They use that call as a way to keep track of who is there." Read More

回收飲料杯，從生活中清淨海洋！
應根據2010年9月台灣參與國際淨灘行動統計結果顯示，台灣海岸最常見到的廢棄物是塑膠袋(19.06%)，平均1.5公尺的海岸線就有一個被隨意棄置 的塑膠袋；排名第二的台灣海岸廢棄物則是玻璃飲料瓶(16.65%)。即使是在離島澎湖，廢棄的塑膠飲料瓶仍然是海灘廢棄物的最大宗。這30,304件海 岸廢棄物中，有70%的海岸垃圾都是來自民眾日常生活或前往海岸休憩時隨意棄置，其中絕大多數是一次性使用的容器，如：塑膠袋、飲料杯。顯示台灣民眾使用 「一次性使用」的塑膠袋、飲料杯，仍毫無節制。
據估計，台灣的連鎖飲料店，每年大約用掉15億個「一次性飲料杯」，用量可觀，且對環境造成相當大的負擔；而這些飲料杯之所以成為海岸廢棄物，嚴重汙染海 洋與海岸景觀，其實與我們的回收政策有著密不可分的關係。回收政策對海灘廢棄物的直接影響，由寶特瓶便可窺見其奧祕：淨灘時，可發現大量寶特瓶瓶蓋，但卻 沒有等量的寶特瓶，為什麼?這是因為寶特瓶有回收機制、可以換錢，但瓶蓋沒有！
不過現在有個好消息，2011年5月1日起，環保署開始實施《一次用外帶飲料杯回收獎勵金數額及實施方式》了。由黑潮海洋文教基金會、台灣環境資訊協會、 荒野保護協會、台南社大、國立海洋科技博物館籌備處、綠色公民行動聯盟共同組成的「清淨海洋行動聯盟 （Taiwan Ocean Cleanup Alliance）」，在5月3日共同召開記者會，發表2010 國際淨灘日台灣成果報告，肯定回收飲料杯政策立意良好，但更重要的是，從源頭減少廢棄物的產生，鼓勵民眾要自備杯子並瞭解不同的塑膠杯，有不同的安全性...(繼續閱讀)

動保混畜產 只會吃不會保護
明年政府將組織改造，農委會將升格為農業部，但農委會下轄的動物福利部門卻仍與「畜產」放在同一個單位，動保團體抗議：「畜產動保不分家、動物保護是空話！」為催生專責動物保護司，數個動保團體14日發起「一人一信，救救流浪動物」活動，邀請民眾參與催生動保司的連署，透過面對面的溝通，讓民眾更了解目前動物保護制度的困境。 目前中央動保單位僅是農委會畜牧處底下的「動保科」，正職員工只有6、7人，因為經費不足，無法落實動物保護法到各鄉鎮。關懷生命協會專員黃芷嫻表示，全台灣17個鄉鎮只有13位動保員，這些動保員還得身兼行政職，人手嚴重不足。 另一方面，動保科並沒有進行源頭管制工作，流浪動物數量不減反增，政府每年花2億經費，不斷在捕捉、撲殺的惡性循環中原地踏步。因為預算有限，導致動保處只能針對貓狗等一般人熟知的同伴動物管理，其他動物沒有獲得應有的保護。

Beluga Whales Won't Be Coming (to Ocean Park)
Ocean Park has abandoned its plan to import
wild-caught beluga whales from Russia, following an outcry from animal
welfare groups.Chairman Allan Zeman and his fellow executives
decided yesterday morning to drop the option of bringing in the
near-threatened species for the park's new Polar Adventure attraction,
which opens next year. The U-turn comes even though Ocean Park has an option on six belugas caught in the wild last year and being kept in a holding facility in Russia and has begun work on a tank to accommodate the whales. Read more

He has tried tofu, tempeh and seitan, and he has inhaled. And the results have been spectacular:
Clinton, who had quadruple bypass surgery in 2004 to pay for the sins of his infamous meat-heavy and fat-heavy diet, has lost 24 pounds and has lowered his cholesterol levels dramatically since switching to veganism, or at least near veganism, in 2010. Read more

There Can be Little Moral Progress Without Improved Animal Welfare
...China’s centralized government can, if it so chooses, ensure that animal-welfare laws apply throughout the country. The animal-welfare movement in China should not be satisfied with its small, but conspicuous, success regarding animal abuse in zoos. A mother and son are under investigation and facing several counts of animal cruelty after Granite Falls police discovered 31 animals — cats and dogs — dead in a feces-filled home.
A locksmith called to changed the locks at the home in the 500 block of Granite Avenue was overwhelmed with a foul smell and called police Friday afternoon.
When Granite Falls Police Chief Dennis Taylor arrived, he was shocked by the conditions, saying it is the worst he's ever seen. "Does the world 'indescribable' mean anything to you?" he said. "These were deplorable conditions — feces 3 inches deep over every surface of the house, and six months of garbage everywhere."

保育石虎遭捕獸夾傷 恐須截肢
苗栗縣苑裡鎮火炎山自然生態保護區，昨天驚見瀕臨絕種的一級保育類動物石虎遭大型捕獸夾夾傷，消防隊員獲報後先將石虎帶回隊部，聯絡屏東科技大學保育類野生動物收容中心趕來處理，中心照養員陳美汀說，受傷的應是年輕的公石虎，將視傷勢決定是否截肢。 「唉唷！怎麼有貓被夾住？」苗栗縣苑裡鎮石鎮社區發展協會昨天舉辦親子健行賞櫻，中午在苗50縣道終點處用餐後在附近散步，驚見火炎山腳下一處小山路，有大型貓科動物右前腳被捕獸夾抓住，傷口見骨，老一輩民眾一眼認出受傷的正是石虎。

農曆兔年還沒到，棄兔數量已大幅出現！至十一日止，北市愛兔協會統計處理了六件寵物兔棄養案例；另外，北市動物保護處今年已收容六隻遭遺棄的寵物兔。北市愛兔協會表示，面對可預期的棄養潮，呼籲民眾面對商人的促銷手段一定要有自制力，盲目飼養的結果只會造成更多的棄養潮。 北市愛兔協會表示，今年開春才短短幾天，協會已處理了六件寵物兔棄養案例，案件周期縮短為平均每二天一個案，與去年同期相比增加了近一倍。去年台北市愛兔協會安置了一百十七隻遭到棄養的寵物兔，平均每三天就要完成一個個案服務。

One passer-by was so moved by Pai Chai's plight that she tried to buy her to find it a new home, but the shop owners were not interested. 據了解，澳洲袋鼠肉產業代表著當今世界上對陸地野生動物規模最大的產業化屠殺。出於種種商業目的，每年大約有300萬只袋鼠被殺害。它們都是些敏感、聰明且高度社會化的小生命。然而，在這些數據背後，還隱藏著一些鮮為人知，甚至故意回避社會大眾的真相。
與農場裡“批量生產”的肉牛、肉豬不同，袋鼠往往被人們射殺在野外的灌木叢中。動手開槍的人無需經過嚴格的監管和審核，也許是一名專業獵手， 也許只是個想“找樂子”的普通人。根據聯邦工作條例，基於商業目的獵殺袋鼠時，要求一槍擊中其頭部，盡量減少它們的痛苦，以達到“人道”的目的。然而，在 現實中要打出如此幹脆的一槍實屬不易――可能是因為捕獵通常在夜晚進行，槍手很難看清楚；也可能是袋鼠的腦袋太小，不易瞄准；又或者是部分槍手的槍法太 差，經驗不足……

搶救受傷流浪動物 台北市救援車上路
已經無家可歸的流浪動物，如果身上又帶著傷，不但有惡化的危險，也恐因民眾擔心有攻擊性，不敢送醫而延誤救治。現在台北市政府推出動物的專屬救護車，如果民眾遇到受傷的流浪動物，可撥打1999市民熱線或是動保通報專線8791-3064，幫助這些可憐的動物們就醫。 據統計，台北市動物保護處11個月內就接獲1,400餘件的救援案件，救援任務相當頻繁；但因原有的捕犬車設備不足，使得急需醫治的動物，無法在第一時間獲得最佳的照顧。因此，動保處日前添購3輛新式「動物救援車」，媲美人類救護車的等級，具備專業人員與設備，預計將可「拯救」更多需要幫助的流浪動物。(繼續閱讀...)

牠可能是英國最醜的狗，但是牠的滑稽樣子，反而讓牠獲得一個溫暖的家。 這隻失去部分視力的混種波音特犬(Pointer)由於長得太醜，竟然被取名為「噁」（Ug)。牠被安置在動物收容所裡好幾個月都沒人理會，但是 在咖啡館工作的一名女子愛波帕克，在「五月花」動物收容所(Mayflower sanctuary)的網站上發現牠後，卻對牠一見鍾情。 後來，愛波帶著兩名女兒去收容所，當場被牠「打敗」，於是就決定領養了，而且替牠重新取名為「道格」(Doug)。 愛波說：「人們第一次看到牠時，都會怔了一下。牠鼓鼓的眼睛和歪七扭八的牙齒，樣子很好笑。牠像是撞到東西，但是牠有一種奇特的氣質，讓牠變得很可愛！」

24th Orca Dies at SeaWorld
The death toll at SeaWorld continues to rise as another captive orca dies unexpectedly at the park.
Kalina, a 25-year-old orca at SeaWorld Orlando, died suddenly of unknown causes two weeks ago. She is the fourth orca to die at a SeaWorld park in the past four months.
