On Nov. 22, the news headline stated “What a misery!! An eight-day old boy was mauled to death by the family dog!!”.  Headlines like these can cause a lot of worry amongst parents to be.  Even my friends asked me “my friend is about to have a baby, can your association take their dog?”I couldn’t help thinking “If they hadn’t planned to take care of their pets for life, then why bother have a pet in the first place??”

We all need to understand that it is possible for pets and kids to get along well together! For instance, kids need to be taught how to get along with pets under their parents’ supervision. Kids should also be taught to treat their pets as part of the family and not harass them. When our pets show signs of being anxious or annoyed, they should be given the proper time and space to calm down. Parents should treat pets and kids equally because pets are also part of the family! Very importantly kids should be taught not to bother pets while they are eating, or touch their food. Also, kids shouldn’t stay alone with pets without any supervision, and parents should spend quality time training their pets in basic obedience. More and more scientific studies have proven that kids brought up with pets have higher resistance against allergies, so abandoning pets when babies come is not the right way, not to mention illegal!

In pets’ mind, you are their family! They should be treated the same by us, and shouldn’t be given up because of someone’s opinion or a new member of the family has arrived. If you want to have a pet, you have the obligation tolove and care for them for their whole life!  After all, if you give them up, then what kind of lessons are you teaching your kids? This is something worth considering!!

Taiwan SPCA appeals strongly to everyone to think twice before you decide to have a pet as it’s a commitment for life. If you love him, never abandon him!
